IW: Soon, our live exclusive from C19, but now, with dramatic coverage of today’s annual Period Classic, here is Dennis Ball.
Dennis Ball: Izzy. For the past ten years, Darcy has beaten all-comers in the Rosings Rose Bowl Steeplechase but this year’s hot property, JT (John Thornton), with his flashing eyes and powerful limbs, has raised the temperature somewhat in earlier outings and there are high hopes that he’ll have a long-running trophy-winning career. We join the race in its final stages with our commentator Billie Yard.
Billie Yard: Thanks Dennis. And Darcy’s early lead has been cut, but blanket publicity and high viewing figures, coupled with a familiar story, have kept him ahead. It’s all down to the last two fences …and Darcy’s leading by a length as his horse crashes into the water jump and… no, he’s stayed on and Darcy’s up again, dripping wet. Groans and cries from the crowd, some low moaning and a few swoons, and the smelling salts are out for the first time. … JT has managed to leap the water in one majestic bound of those lovely legs – did we mention he was running on foot? And let’s just admire the grace and power of his technique; the beautifully measured pace; the steadily building rhythm. But the heat is getting to him. Look at the elegant swish of that frock coat as he slips it off! And he’s picking up speed now …and he’s loosening his cravat… and it’s undone …and he drops it!! The smelling salts are out in the crowd again. The sighs are more pronounced. His collar is open…the gap is closing! And Darcy’s glancing towards the piano! He’s glancing towards the piano and catching Lizzie’s eye! Time is almost at a stand still, everything’s in slow motion… JT has picked a yellow rose from the final fence as Darcy and Lizzie share their feelings and Darcy’s still in front, but only just. JT is closing and Darcy’s in the carriage kissing Lizzie - sighs, swoons - he’s almost at the line, as JT gives Margaret the rose … but JT is ahead!! Darcy is rooted to the spot and JT’s taking Margaret’s hand and looking into her face and…she kissed his hand! - Sighs, moans, gasps, people are dabbing their eyes - and he reaches forward and kisses her once… twice… loose horse Henry Lennox getting in the way there… and three… and four …and five…with each kiss JT stretches his lead… and she’s coming home with him and he’s across the line first!!…And the crowd are sitting on the ground in a smiling, sniffling daze!! I’ve never seen anything like it! A synchronised swoon!! And what a tremor that caused!! Did the earth move? That was no Mexican wave! That was the Thornton Thud!
IW: Well, thanks Billie. What a race that was! My word! A new phenomenon has emerged in front of our eyes. Sensational!
